For nearly 30 years, Somnath Ghimire has been more than just a resident of Woodside, NY, he has been a neighbor, a guardian, and a tireless advocate for the hardworking families of District 30. From the front lines of democratic movements in Nepal to the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in Queens, Somnath’s life is a testament to the power of showing up.
Somnath’s political journey began in the streets of Biratnagar, Nepal. In 1988, as a young man driven by an unyielding passion for human rights, he marched under the four-star flag, chanting slogans for democracy. He was a key participant in the 1990 People’s Movement (2046 B.S.), learning early on that real change requires both a triumphant spirit and the courage to challenge the status quo.
In 1996, Somnath arrived in America as a student. While his geography changed, his convictions did not. He became a living example for every immigrant that “dreams have no boundaries.” Over the next two decades, he didn’t just build a life in Queens; he built a community. He understood that staying true to one’s roots is the only way to build a branch that reaches toward progress.
Somnath’s leadership is defined by action, not just titles. As the President of the Jackson Heights Chapter of ASAAL (Alliance of South Asian American Labor)NYS Director of South Asians for America (SAFA) and the Founder President of GPK Foundation America, he has stood as a pillar for:
● Workers’ Rights: Protecting the dignity of the taxi drivers, vendors, and laborers who keep New York running.
● Humanitarian Aid: Distributing 55,000+ meals and medical supplies during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
● Youth & Education: Acting as a guardian and guide for students and newcomers, often available 24/7 to those in need.
