Somnath Ghimire Runs for New York State Assembly

Nepali American community leader Somnath Ghimire is contesting the New York State Assembly election from Queens’ pivotal Assembly District 30. He is running in the Democratic primary, which will be held on June 23, 2026. Early voting will begin on June 13 and continue through June 21.

Assembly District 30 includes the diverse neighborhoods of Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Maspeth, and Middle Village in Queens. In this multicultural and multiethnic district, Ghimire has already drawn significant attention from voters. With a vision of building a stronger, fairer, and more inclusive Queens, he has been actively engaging with local residents through regular meetings and community outreach.

Speaking about his campaign, Ghimire said, “For weeks and weeks, I have been meeting with friends, neighbors, senior citizens, and young people, sharing ideas and experiences on how we can build better communities together.” He added, “I firmly believe that unity in diversity paves the way for peace, prosperity, progress, and limitless potential.”

His campaign priorities include affordable housing, strengthening public schools, protecting workers’ rights, supporting the growth of small businesses, and ensuring inclusive representation for all residents of Assembly District 30. He has also pledged to be a strong advocate for immigrant families and to protect their rights.

A resident of Woodside, Queens, since 1996, Somnath Ghimire has served for more than two decades as a dedicated leader and organizer within the Nepali American and South Asian communities. He has played a significant role in supporting workers and immigrants. In addition, he served as a Field Supervisor for the 2020 U.S. Census and has traveled to 22 countries on human rights missions with INHURED International.
